What is the best folding electric wheelchair?

Thankfully now there are some great bits of kit now available - Folding Powerchairs that fold easily and can be brought with you in the boot of your car, or brought on holiday via plane, coach or train.

Their weight is a testament to the high level of engineering and detailed thought that has went into the design - but they are still around 23kg. This is not an insignificant weight and it is worthwhile trying to lift this weight in a real world environment to see if you can do this. If you need a car hoist we can hep advise on that too. What folding electric wheelchairs are airline approved?

Any battery needs to be less than 300 watts to be automatically approved for airline travel. We always recommend that you contact your own airline for confirmation and clarification. The models from our range that are airline approved are;

Storage in the car

Your Foldachair® D10 can be placed easily into the boot of your car although you will need to consider if you can lift it on your own or whether you need to consider a hoist - we can help advise on this too. Flying with your FOLDACHAIR® D10

The Civil Aviation Authority restricts the battery capacity of any products containing Lithium Ion batteries to a maxium of 300 WH and they do not make an exception for mobility equipment. The FOLDACHAIR® D10 comes as standard with 2 x 24 V x 7Ah batteries which is 336 WH. If you are flying you should therefore remove all but one of the battery packs before flying to reduce the battery capacity to 168 WH. Please bear in mind that this will at least half the range of your D10. You should always check ahead with individual airlines to check their own policies before booking your flight.

The Freedom chair comes with an airline approval certificate and they make a tremendous day chair for excursions or use on a cruise ship. The battery is under 300 watts which means it is approved for airline travel but we strongly advise you contact your airline prior to travel to verify their policy. It comes with an under seat zip bag, and a wrap around travel bag as standard. The materials and cushioning is easily removed for cleaning. They enjoy excellent build quality with ISO, CE and FDA approval. The armrests fold up to allow for easy side access if required. The standard model has a range of 8 miles but you can easily extend the range by adding in extra batteries – by doing this you can increase the range to up to 25 miles!
